Homecoming Destination Disneyland New Book to Celebrate Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary To commemorate Disneyland’s Golden Anniversary, Ape Pen Publishing will release Homecoming Destination Disneyland, a collection of vintage photographs by veteran news photographer Mell Kilpatrick, narrative tributes from a host of celebrities, and exclusive artwork by legendary Disney artist Sam McKim, (also art by, Walt Disney, Floyd Norman, Willie Ito, Brian McKim, & Ron … More >>

This book is also a tribute to the author’s grandfather, Mell Kilpatrick. Mell was a great photographer who had the knack of being at the right place at the right time. Mell died in 1962, and his darkroom was locked for the next 30 years. Many of these photos have never been seen before. They mark a time of tremendous risk and development at Disneyland. You can also see how the layouts of the lands have changed, and how the rides that are still running have evolved since their initial inception (There was no track on the Autotopia!)
Carlene also gathered short remembrances from various people about Disney and Disneyland. There are stories from Wally Boag, Tommy Cole, Ollie Johnson, Fess Parker, and Art Linkletter, to name a few. The down side is that they, due to necessity, are very short, and sometimes take on the feeling of an edited “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”.
But the book is really about photographs of an early Disneyland, and that goal is definitely reached. At a 174 pages, it seemed too short. I closed the book wanting more. I hope more volumes are in the works. I have added the previous 4 volumes to my wish list, and hope to get them in the near future.
If you are at all interested in Disneyland’s history and development, this book is a must-have!
